అనుకున్నాడేమో శివుడు!

సోమవారానికొకడు సంవత్సరానికొకడు,

గుడి నిండా తన పిల్లల్ని చూసి నవ్వుకొనేడు,
"అయినా కాలంతో నాకేమీ?" అనుకున్నాడేమో శివుడు!

ఫలహారాల జోరు అభిషేక జలపాతాల హోరు,
జలుబు చేస్తుందేమో ఈరోజు అనుకొనేరు,
"గంగే పారుతుండగా ఇదింకొక అల" అనుకున్నాడేమో శివుడు!

కోరికల చిట్టాలు చుట్టుచేరిన ఈ వేళ, 
చేయవలసిన కృషి స్వహస్తమున హలములా,
"వేప నాటిన తీపి మామిడేల?" అనుకున్నాడేమో శివుడు!

వేదము ఘోషించినా, విత్తము వెచ్చించినా, 
అడిగినచో మితము, అడగనచో హితము, 
"అనన్యా చింతయంతోమామ్ అన్నానుగా!" అనుకున్నాడేమో శివుడు!

అమరావతి కథలు - సత్యం శంకరమంచి

It was a pure coincidence that I began this book on the last day of 2021 (Dad's birthday gift bypassed !). Just like my initial reaction after reading వేయిపడగలు, I was happy that I could read at least now and at the same time lamented for missing out on this master piece all this long. This too, is a must read for every Telugu connoisseur, especially for those who have memories of  living in rural Andhra. This collection of stories in RK Narayan style, is a delight catering to all age groups. 

Every tree, flower, animal, adult, child, profession, festival, sand grain, water drop, food, sound, smell, sight of Amaravati comes alive with the author's narration. We cheer in the processions, feel the sorrow, wait with hope, marvel at the innocence, amaze at the simplicity and always wary of the animal lurking beneath the skin of human psyche. All the events unfold in and around Amaravati with the eternal witness being Krishnamma (truly a river is a mother and is to be called likewise) flowing silently staying unaffected.

It still surprises me how this grave injustice was meted to language children of my school days by not including even one of the hundred gems the author so carefully crafted. The stories are simple, elegant, relatable and unsophisticated - just the way an injection straight to the heart ought to be.

The art work of Bapu (artist) competes to catch up with the author's brevity and skill. As is my usual habit, I tried to write a self help synopsis but was left wondering with the amazing foreword by Ramana (writer). The foreword has to be read twice - before and after completing the work.

I sincerely hope that at least one of these stories finds place in the language curriculum of our school kids. 

Below are few lines for self-help:

• అన్నం పెట్టే ఆలిని కోరుకోవాలి కానీ అడుక్కుతినే పల్లెం కావాలి అంటావేంట్రా? 

• ఉన్నప్పుడు లేనిదాని కోసం పరుగు, లేనప్పుడు ఉన్నదాని కోసం తపన, అనుభూతి పునరావృతం కావడం కోసం అహరహం ఆరాటం.

• కుపుత్రో జాయేత్ క్వచిదపి కుమాత నభవతి. కొడుకు చెడ్డవాడైతే తల్లి మహిమేమి తగ్గుతుందా? 

• నేను మేలుకొనే ఉన్నాను - అంది గాలికి మోగిన గుడి ధ్వజస్తంభపు చిరుగంట.

• మడిగా ముత్యపు చిప్పలో ముత్యంలా బతకాలనుకుంది,  నీళ్లలో చేపల బతకాలని తెలిసింది కాదు.

నల్లజోడు మనుజుడు

 (ప్రపంచాన్ని మార్చు కిటుకు మన చిటికె లోనే దాగున్నది. స్వాతంత్య్రమనగా మన సన్నని ఆలోచనా  సందులను వీడి విశ్వమానవ సౌభ్రాతృత్వం అనే రహదారిపై పయనించడమే!)

వేదికపై ఉన్న మోజు తీరునా ఏదోక రోజు? 

పాలుగ్రోలి పెరిగినను తుదిన పుడమిపురుగుల పాలే,

విఫలమయ్యిరి విధి వీలునామాన, నేనునేననిన ఘన పాలకులే,

పేరు ఏది? పరివారమేది? తరతరాల తలరాత చూడు,

చెంత చేరిన మనిషి జన్మ జారు లోపే మాయ వీడు,

ఓర్పులేని మాటలాగిన, తెగిన మూటవోలె దొరలు మార్పు,

నీవు మెరిసిన జగతి మురియు, విశ్వభారతికిదియే కూర్పు,

నాలుకపై ఉన్న పదును ప్రణాళికపై పెట్టి చూడు,

కల్ల నుండి కాపాడు కంటక కంచె వోలె,

మేటి వన్నె దిద్దు మెత్తని కుంచె వోలె,

మా ఎదుగుదలకు సునెరవు నీవు,

జీవన తాపాన చల్లని తరువు నీవు,

ఎగబాకు తీగకు ఆధారము అమ్మ,

నింగిరంగుల పతంగానికి దారమేగా అమ్మ,

పురవీధులలో పైరగాలి

పుడమిలో నాటేను అపురూపంగా ఓ విత్తనం,

ఒడలు వత్తిగా, చమట చమురుగా చేసేను పెత్తనం,

మన్ను దున్నేను నిలవాలని వెన్నుతో తన కలలన్నీ,

పసిడి దీపమై వెలగాలని తనవారి బ్రతుకులన్నీ,

కరువుబరువు చీడపీడ వ్యయవయో భారాలని,
ఒడుపుగా ఓర్పుగా ఒకపరి తన చాట చెరగగలదని,
వడ్లలో వినయం, మినుములలో మర్యాద గట్టిగా మూటకట్టి,
స్వేదరత్నాలకై పయనమయ్యే రైతన్న పురము బాటపట్టి,

అక్షరాన్ని సాగుచేయుట తక్షణ కర్తవ్యమని,
అలనాటి అథమస్మృతులు తిరిగి దరికి రారాదని,
కండ లేదు, అండ లేదు, నమ్మేను స్వీయ మస్తకాన్ని,

అల్పమేది? స్వల్పమేది? బ్రతుకు బడిన సుఖతల్పమేది?
మన్నులో నిద్రించునాడు ధర్మ శిల్పమే వెంటవచ్చునది,
సమన్వయం, సర్దుబాటులు సరళ జీవన సారంశం,
అదిమిపట్టి పాటించిన రంగుల జగతి మనవశం.

అమృతము కురిపిస్తుంది,
అనృతము గుప్పిస్తుంది,
ఏమిది? అని అడుగగా,
నీ మనోబింబమేగా నేనంటుంది!

మెత్తని పలుకులే మణిపూసలు,
హత్తుకొని ఓదార్చే ప్రియబాసలు,
ఊరినే మంచి చేయు పొలిమేరలు,
పెడుదామా అదుపులో మనమాటలు?

కమ్మని వంటకై పరితపిస్తుంది,
టన్నులైనా స్వాహా నిబ్బరంగా చేస్తుంది,
ఏమిది? అని అడుగగా,

కోరికలు కొను కష్టాలు కోకొల్లలు,

జలం - Water

అనంత విశ్వాన ప్రాణానికి పునాదిని నేనే,
అమ్మ గర్భాన తేలియాడిన నీ ఉయ్యాలా నేనే,

సముద్రాన ముద్రించిన వానచినుకును నేనే,
మోటరేసి మోసుకొచ్చిన పలుకరించేది నేనే,

కనుల వెనుక నేనే, కలువలు కొలువైన కొలనంతా నేనే,
అలల నిండా నేనే, వలన చిక్కు చేపల కలల సౌధం నేనే,

దేహంలో నేనే, దాహానికి తాయత్తుని నేనే,

వంటలోని మసాలాలు పెరిగే,
ఇంటన బంధాలు సన్నగిల్లే,
రంగురంగుల గా మారే బాహ్యం,
నల్ల రంగు మిగిలే అంతర్ముఖం!

మంచి- మాటల వరకే పరిమితం,
వేపను దాటే చేతల్లోని చేదుదనం,
మారిపోయే సంస్కారం  సంప్రదాయం,
ఫోటోలకే పరిమితం ముచ్చటైన ఆహార్యం!

చద్దన్నం, చక్కదనం పర్యాయాలు,
పలికావో తలుపు తట్టు అవహేళనలు,
ఎవడి రుచి వాడిదే ఈ కాలంలో,
తుమ్మితే పోయే సిద్ధాంతాల తరుణంలో!

చద్దన్నం హితం పిజ్జా రుచి భరితం,
పాతది రోతకాదు కొత్తదంతా సరికాదు,
తెలివైనవాడు చేయు బేరము ఆచితూచి,

నూతిలోని నీరును పైకి తెచ్చు చిన్న చేద,
ఛాతిలోని ధైర్యాన్ని తట్టిలేపు ఓ వీర గాథ,
దాగివున్న తిమిరాన్ని త్రోలివేయు శ్రీ గురుబోధ,
ప్రపంచాన ఉపకారుల చేయూతదేగా ఈ కథ!

మన్నులోని విత్తులను మొలకించు రవికిరణం,
అడగదు ఎన్నడూ తన సాయానికి ఏ ఫలం,
మూడునాళ్ళేగా మన ఈ భువి పయనం,
మరి కోరుతామెందుకు మూడెకరాల శిలాఫలకం?

అడగకున్న అందించుదాం ఆత్మీయపు ఆసరా,

చెరువు కథ ( Story of a Pond)

విలసిల్లే నాడు మా ఊరి మా చెరువు,
చెంతనే ఉండగా పశుపక్షులు తరువు,
జాతరలు,ఈతలు మరెన్నెటికో  నెలవు,
స్నేహాలు విరిసేటి ఎన్నో కబుర్ల కొలువు!

గ్రామానికే బొట్టులా కళకళలాడే  చెరువు,
సాకింది తరాలను లేకుండా ఏ బరువు,
పుష్కలానికి ప్రతిరూపం మా వరాల తరువు,
నేర్వలేదు ఎవ్వరూ ఈ పదం - కరువు!

కల్పవల్లి నేడు అనిపించేను నిష్ఫలము,
భూభస్మాసురులకు ఎదురులేని కాలము,
పంపు పైపులతో పీల్చేము భూగర్భజలము,

అడిగాను నేను చైత్రాన్ని,

అడిగాను నేను చైత్రాన్ని,
ఇచ్చిందెవరు ఇంత ధైర్యాన్ని?
వెనకున్న పదకొండు మాసాలనా?
నీవు రాక అవి రాలేవనా?

ఎక్కడిదింత  సోయగమని?

అనాది నుండీ నీ గమనం,
అలుపేలేని ఈ పయనం,

ఆగదుగా నీ ఉత్సాహం!

చిరు ప్రాయానికే ఓ అందం,
బూర, గాలిపటాల అనుబంధం,
పెద్దయ్యాక కనబడదేం?
నేర్చిన గాలిపాఠాల సంకేతం!

మల్లెల గంధం మోస్తావు,
మురుగును సైతం భరిస్తావు,
కర్తవ్య కర్మని తరిస్తావు,
గీతాసారాన్ని కురిపిస్తావు!

అందరిలో నీవున్నావు,
స్థాయి అంటదన్నావు,
అంతలోనే వెడలిపోయేవు,

మర్మము గ్రహించి సాగాలి,

నాది నీది నడుమ ఓ సన్నని సరిహద్దు,
ఉన్నాడుగా సైనికుడు కాపలాగా ఏ పొద్దు,
గర్వమొకడైతే  కులం మరొకని పేరు,
మరెందరో ఉన్నారు-కాదువీరు వేరు వేరు!

నవ్వుతూ ధరిద్దాం పెద్దరికపు తలపాగ,
మెరుస్తుంది చీకట్లో బరువులేని ఈ నగ,
స్వతహాగా క్షమిద్దాం ఎంతైనా వెక్కిరింత,
మనసారా పంచిపెడదాం తేలికైన పలుకరింత!

ఇల్లు,రాష్ర్టం,దేశం కాదు నే చెబుతున్నది,
మందిరమనే మనస్సు ఏ ఎల్లలు ఎరుగనన్నది,
ఎదిగినా ఏమి లాభం జీవరాశులు శతకోటి,
'తన' నుండీ 'మన'  దాకా సాగాలి గడప దాటి!

విశ్వమంతటిని ఆడించేను నీ లీలా తాళం,
అందున భాగమేగా నీ  గలమునందు గరళం,
కృపతో  నింపావు జీవితాన పరిమళం,
భక్తి ముక్తులను నీ ధ్యానము చేయు సరళం;

అమితమైన అవకాశం మా యందు వాక్తాళం,
కంఠమునందు నిలపాలి మాటలలోని గరళం,
ఇది గ్రహించిన ఇక బ్రతుకులు సరళం,
నీ రూపులు మేమైతే కాదా భువి పరిమళం!

విద్య నిరంతరం, వినయం దాని సారం,

నైపుణ్యమవసరం, గర్వమొక భారం,

Knowledge is recurrent while humility is its undercurrent,

Essential is our talent but ego turns it blunt,

భక్తి శుభారంభం, జీవనం దాని బింబం,

మనస్సు మందిరం, మాట అచట పరిమళం,

Devotion is true when life is blended in it's brew,

At the altar of the conscience, sweet speech the only fragrance,

కర్మ నిష్కామం, కృషి మన ధర్మం,

కృప కర్మానుసారం, క్రమశిక్షణ సంస్కారం,

Selfless shall be our action and efforts primary obligation,

Grace follows acts noble, while discipline scripts our preamble,

Leading from the Front - Col.S.P. Wahi (Retd.)

Motivation:

An organization can ill afford too many square pegs in round holes. Negative attributes are like parasitic weeds – they demand continuous attention to remain controlled. It is our responsibility to learn from the observations of senior leaders from our own organization who walked their talk and more so when such chronicles are few. This is an attempt to provide interesting lines verbatim from ‘Leading from the Front – from army to corporate world’, by Col. S.P. Wahi (Feb. 13th, 2019 – 2 years in memoriam). This is the result of a chance encounter of a copy supplied by Corporate communications lying on my senior’s desk. Most of the book surprisingly rings true to this day though contains thoughts from early 90’s. A well written Appendix- B is a must read to every ONGCian.

• In theory, theory and practice are the same, in practice, they aren’t. (Foreword)

• “The buck stops here”-it takes a truly great leader to make the tough decisions and even greater leader to not begrudge those who opposed him after they are proven to be wrong. (Foreword)

• Human relation problems are the root cause of low performance of the enterprises.(Preface)

• A control room to document all decisions and the authority taking such decisions, does help to identify leaders with character and courage. (Preface)

• ‘The honour and safety of the country comes first, always and every time, the welfare safety and comfort of people under your charge comes next and your own self comes last, always and every time’.(p.7)

• The philosophy is that anyone who ceases to improve ceases to be good.(p.8)

• Leaders have to know their people well to inspire and motivate them to put their best. (p.8)

• Common uniform creates a sense of belonging to the group.(p.8)

• Management through wandering ensures involvement of rank and file and fast feedback for corrective measures – those responsible for decision making were encouraged to move out of their offices and interact with the men on sites. (p.54)

A book which urges to script our life based on meaningfulness steering clear of what the majority may feel right. The thoughts the author shares touch us with their sincerity as they carry the weight of experience from holocaust and not the typical steps to success. Came across this during a  TV interview of  Mr. RN Pravin Kumar of Telangana civil services.

వేయిపడగలు - Kohinoor of modern Telugu literature!

This 999 page, 36 chapter magnum opus of Kavisaamrat Sri Viswanatha Satynarayana garu was completed in 1934 within 29 days, as he was dictating extempore to his younger brother  donning scribe.

After recommendation by Sri Chaganti garu in his pravachanam, I decided to taste this. I am sure this divine taste shall remain forever in my mind. With meager introduction to the language from our present English schooling system, reading this is a milestone for me. The first thought that occurred as I completed this was:

తెలుగు కొంతైనా వచ్చినందుకు సంతసించాలా?
లేక ఇంతే వచ్చినందుకు చింతసించాలా?
అర్థంకాని వింత పరిస్థితి!

The rich imagery, quality of expression, transition from traditional way of living to sophisticated concessional ways, invasion of western habits and language, inferiority towards native knowledge and culture, evolution(not sure if it is!) of society, all this was so cleverly conveyed maintaining the grip of the story and not turning preachy.

Some social customs of those days may seem uncomfortable and outdated but we may need to save our hindsight for some other time to enjoy what this honeycomb has hidden. Logic, strength of argument, neutrality in character portrayal, variety of issues covered, makes this a must read for all the Telugu tongued. Those enriched with memories of village life of early nineties in Andhra will have a field day.

Strong observations on education, religion, individual determination and free will, institution of marriage, economic inequity, wealth, philosophy, devotion are outstanding.  Every character of Subbannapeta – Dharmarao, Arundhati, Krishnama naidu, Rangarao, Harappa naidu, Kumaraswami, Girika, Ganachari, Pasirika, Mangamma, Rameswaramu – is a synecdoche of the personality types that we deal even today and definitely tomorrow.

Appreciating an Effort

Book - Freedom in Exile

Frankly speaking, it was the reputation of the protagonist, HH the XIV Dalai Lama (Lama Thondup turned Tenzin Gyatso) that cropped a desire to read this work. The day I spotted the book with my colleague RP Rao, without delay I acquired the reading rights.

The author though entitled to a lot of air, surprisingly and delightfully is more grounded than most of us. The simplicity and sincerity of his tone rivets you to the story. Added to this is the colourful culture and landscape of Tibet (Potala palace reinforces it). His hope and cultivated patience in the face of provocative oppression, in the interest of his land and people is the undercurrent in the later half of the book.

The unique beliefs, passion for religion, simple life of Tibetans enchant us consistently. This unfailingly leads us to empathize with the Tibetan cause.

Few learnings from this book for my benefit:

• For it is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others.
• "Political power comes from the barrel of a gun"- Mao
• 'Man is ultimately responsible for his own destiny'- Marxism".
• There is a limit to what individuals can do but no limit to universal response
• When men become desperate they consult the Gods. And when Gods become desperate they tell lies.
• deed done with good motivation is a religious act
• Words were like rainbows - beautiful but without substance.
• Intense competitiveness and insecurity makes people to show their true feelings only to their cats and dogs.
• Skeptical mind can be positive if used as the basis for further enquiry.
• Religion to serve humanity without ignoring reality.
• Human behaviour and not human beings that makes them my enemy.
• Intellectually directed desire
• I am aware that not finding something does not mean that it does not exist. It only proves that the experiment was incapable of finding it. (If I have a non-metallic object in my pocket which is not picked up by a metal detector, it does not mean that my pocket is empty)
• Universal responsibility as Human beings
• No matter what part of the world we come from, fundamentally we are all the same human beings. We all seek happiness and try to avoid suffering.

For as long as space endures,

And for as long as living beings remain,

Until then may I, too, abide

To dispel the misery of the world.

A story of life, a story of death and a story by someone who has seen them both from the threshold.

I was watching a youtube video of Dr. B.M.Hegde, a renowned veteran physician wherein he appreciated this book. I immediately amazoned it. There may be many books in this genre but this effort appears sincere and the pain deep. Well versed in the language of the tongue (literature) and the brain (neurosurgery) - a rare combination and also his education in reputed institutions - Yale, Stanford, Cambridge, takes you to deeper depths of existence very convincingly.

The central theme though is the impermanence of all our efforts and achievements (don't mistake it to insignificance) and the rapidity and uncertainty with which things transform. A guaranteed high flying career and dedication to humanity suddenly change gears and in a flash the hunter becomes the hunted. The sand in the hourglass has dramatically vanished and we are left dismayed by the vicissitudes of fate!

A few expressions from the author which I couldn't help but note down:

• what was falling on my retina was precious
• see what courage sounds like
• never tired of the freedom
• Books- finely ground lenses providing new views of the world
• literature provides best account of the life of the mind
• all disciplines create vocabulary and a set of tools for understanding human life
• moral speculation is puny compared to moral action
• the mannequins you pretend are real; the cadavers you pretend are fake
• putting lifestyle first is how you find a job-not calling
• boredom is awareness of time passing
• virtue required moral, emotional, mental and physical excellence
• technical excellence is a moral requirement
• you can never be good enough
• mercy trumps justice every time
• life is a linear sum of choices
• life is lived in the first twenty years the remaining is reflection
• you can't ever reach perfection, but you can believe in an asymptote toward which you are ceaselessly striving
• Stages of grief- denial, anger, bargain, depression

Needless to say, I finished in the shortest time and gifted to my sister-in-law, a medical student.

ఇంద్రధనుస్సు చందమున ఎల్లలు లేవు కలసివుండిన 

నిత్యజీవన సమరమున వెన్నెలేగా నలుగురుండిన

చీమపుట్టలా తేనెపట్టులా కట్టబడిన మనమంతా

కలసివుండిన సాగిపోదా తేనె సంద్రమై బ్రతుకంతా 

కడలి చుక్కకు కాలువ బొట్టుకు తేడా ఏమిటని శోదిస్తే 

కొలతలొక్కటే మరి చెంతనెందరని నాది మది ప్రశ్నిస్తే

నా ఇంటినుండీ వీధిదాక, నా ఊరినుండీ పుడమి దాక 

మనస్సు పెంచిన, చేయి చాచిన, పై స్వర్గమింక సాగబోదిక 

వసుధైవ కుటుంబమే ఒకనాడు, కానరాదే మరి ఈనాడు?

స్వార్థము తరిగిన, సాయము పెరిగిన, వచ్చునులే అది మర్నాడు! 

Inevitability

dreamt many a time of this knock on my door,

hoped it was you returned on a tenure another,

foolish dreams with far fetched themes,

vanished without whimper on fate's chimes,

want to speak a lot but don't know where to start,

the older i grow, the greater i miss your art,

may be a correction here and a lesson there,

all the small things - suddenly i seem to care,
